MOMO Street Racer Seats

Rating: Thumbs-Up! Thumbs-Up! Thumbs-Up! Thumbs-Up! Thumbs-Up! Good looking and comfortable seats, but tilt mechanism seems cheap.

Car: 1997 GTI VR6

Cost: $695.00 each from Sports Car Accessories. Price does not include brackets!!!

Introductory Note:

First off, let me say that I did not get my seats from Sports Car Accessories, I purchased them used from a person in Florida who already had the brackets attached. I can not confirm that the bracket system I have on my seats is the same that Sports Car Accessories sells, so buyer beware!

Installation:

Installation of these seats was pretty easy. My seats had the brackets already mounted, so all I had to do was remove the front bolt from my OEM seats and the slide them out of the back of the tracks. The new slider brackets mount in the OEM rails. It was a little challenge to get the wrench at some of the bolts, but overall, it was an easy install.

The Good

  • Good looks.
  • Nice amount of side bolstering, especially when compared to stock.
  • Nice shoulder support for hard turns.
  • I also like it that they fold forward and are somewhat adjustable. I just couldn't justify a solid racing seat since my car occasional is taken for longer trips.
  • Holes for straps: My Schroth Auto-Control straps also work nicely with the seats since they have holes for the straps in the shoulder area. Most race seats have holes for straps, so I guess the MOMO's aren't special!

The Bad

  • If you are a heavy or large person, these seats are not for you! They are really designed for thin guys like me (I'm 6'1" and weigh 160 lbs.)
  • As mentioned above, the tilt release mechanism works very poorly. Even though the seats have the benefit of being able to tilt forward, getting them to do so is really difficult!
  • The driver's seat doesn't seem to sit centered with the steering wheel. Granted, this is probably the fault of the bracket and not the seat, but it is somewhat annoying. I'd say that I'm about 3/4" to 1" to the left of the center of my steering wheel. Someday I'm going to remove the seats and see if I can fix this.
  • No adjustable lumber support. I have tendency to like a lot of lumbar support and these seats are a little weak in that area with no way to adjust it.
  • Expensive!

Summary:

Although I'm happy with my seats for what I paid, I think there are other seats out there that could potentially offer more for less money. Before you buy MOMO's, look into Sparco's or Konig's. I'd also highly recommend sitting in a seat before you buy it because most are not returnable!
